Are you carded? Your library card is a ticket to information, relaxation, and adventure. The Library has traditionally been a go-to place in cities. When new residents arrive, they check out the local library.

We have a wonderful library and wish to share its resources with you. Here is some information on Library Cards. Please contact us if you have any questions.

These FAQs explain resident and non-resident cards and library fees:

Who can get a resident card?
What if you are not a resident of the Marion Public Library District but are a real estate property taxpayer?
What if you are not a resident and not a real estate property taxpayer of the Marion Library district nor of any other library district?
What if you live in another library district?
What if you want to borrow from several public libraries or any public library in the state?
What if you are a nonresident student who attends Marion Community Schools?

Who can get a resident card?

The Marion Public Library provides public library service to the residents and real estate property taxpayers of the library district taxed for the support of the Marion Public Library.  The library district has the same boundaries as the City of Marion.  No additional borrowing fee is charged.  These cards are good for 3 years.

What if you are not a resident of the Marion Public Library District but are a real estate property taxpayer?

If you are not a resident, but are a real estate property taxpayer of the library district taxed for support of Marion Public Library, you may bring to the Circulation Desk your real estate property tax receipt showing the amount of library tax paid.  You will be eligible for a nonresident card without paying the borrowing fee.

If you do not meet either of the above qualifications, one or more of the following alternatives for obtaining library card service at Marion or another public library may be helpful.

What if you are not a resident and not a real estate property taxpayer of the Marion Library district nor of any other library district?

A borrowing fee is charged to patrons who do not live inside the Marion Library district and who are not real estate property taxpayers.  Since these patrons are not taxpayers of the library district, this fee is for support of the Marion Public Library.

The current fee for an individual is $57.00 per year or $28.50 for six months; the individual in whose name the card is issued must be present to borrow materials.  The current fee for a family is $132.25 per year or $66.25 for six months.  The family fee makes borrowing available to all members of the immediate family residing in your  household.  Each family member receives a library card.

What if you live in another library district?
If you are a resident or real estate property taxpayer of another library district taxed for the support of that library, you can check with the respective library for information about rules and procedures for a library card with that library. These cards are not valid at Marion Public Library.

What if you want to borrow from several public libraries or any public library in the state?

If you want to do this, you may want a Public Library Access Card (PLAC).  You must have a valid library card from a public library in Indiana.  If you are not a resident or real estate property taxpayer of any library district, you will have to pay a nonresident fee to obtain a library card and, in addition, purchase a PLAC.

You can get a PLAC from the library that issued the library card or here at the Marion Public Library or any public library for an annual fee, currently $50.00.  The PLAC can be used at any public library in the state.  It is an individual card.

Marion Public Library sends fees collected to the Indiana State Library, which administers the PLAC program.  As provided by law, public libraries may be reimbursed from this money for part of their costs of providing PLAC service.

If you have a Public Library Access Card, a Marion Public Library card can be issued for the same time period as shown on your PLAC at no additional fee.

Students who live outside the Marion city limits but who are enrolled in Marion Community Schools may have a Marion Public Library card at no charge.  This is an individual card for the student and may not be used by other family members.

ADMINISTRATORS AND LICENSED EDUCATORS OF THE FOLLOWING SCHOOLS MAY OBTAIN A FREE CARD AT THE MARION PUBLIC LIBRARY:

Marion Community Schools, Faulkner Academy, Lakeview,
and St. Paul’s Parish School.

Please bring your school id when you apply for a card. These cards expire after one year.
