PROCEDURES, POLICIES, & MORE

Q&A

1. Can I come inside the library?

Yes. We have limited services: Quick pickup, fax & copier service, 1-hour computer use. (Computer lab now on the 2nd floor.) New: Curbside pickup, video storytimes via Facebook, and expanded digital services available through this website, Facebook, and Zoom. Indiana History offers services by appointment. The museum remains closed. Study spaces are available on a limited bases. You may read newspapers and magazines - just stop by the reference desk so we can count you. (We will not take your name.)

2. How do I return items?

Use the dropbox or the return areas in Circulation and Children's - please follow any directions. Interlibrary loan should be returned at Circulation so items may be quarantined.

3. I returned items today, but they still show that they're out. Will I be fined?

No. They are being quarantined for 72 hours.

4. What if I already had fines?

Any fines are frozen at the point they were when the library closed. No additional fines have been issued.

5. How does curbside work?

Either place items on hold yourself through the catalog (or use the button at the top) or call in your request. (Phone requests limited to 5 items.) Librarians will find materials and contact you to set a pickup time and give pickup instructions.

6. I don’t have internet. Can I use the MPL WiFi?

We have removed seating except in limited study rooms and study tables and carrels - sign up in reference. (We will take your name for study rooms, as always, but not for reading tables.) WiFi reaches into the parking lot behind the library. Stay in your car to avoid infecting others or become infected yourself. Want WiFi at home? Ask Circulation if there are Hot Spots available.

7. Can I still make requests for genealogy questions?
Indiana History staff are checking requests you send through this form, as well as phone calls. You can use microfilm by appointment; last appointment at 4 p.m. You can also meet through Zoom. You can sign up for both in the pop-up to the right or by calling from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

8. Can I place requests for interlibrary loan or library purchases?

ILL has resumed, though it's taking longer because of quarantines and libraries slowly returning to ILL services. Requests can only go to Indiana libraries; if your request cannot be fulfilled, try again later once more libraries are participating. Please return items through the dropbox or at circulation so they can be quarantined.

9. Hoopla, Overdrive, & Libby aren't working. I get a message that there's something wrong with my card.

Now you can renew your card or pay off fines that you'd gotten before MPL closed. Even tiny fines can cut off these services. The circulation department will help you resolve your problem.
